Things You Need to Know

American Samoa is a U.S. Territory, located 2600 miles southwest of Honolulu, in the South Pacific Ocean. It is the only U.S. Territory located south of the equator. It is not be be confused with the Independent Nation of Samoa a.k.a "Western Samoa", and sometimes just "Samoa", located just 70 miles West of us.

Pago Pago is located on the island of Tutuila (too-too-EE-lah), the main island that makes up the territory. A smaller island, Aunu'u, is located just off the East coast of Tutuila. The Manu'a Islands (Ofu [Oh-foo], Olosega [Oh-lo-sang-ah], and Ta'u [tah-ooh]) are located about 70 miles East of Tutuila.

When making references to TV shows, keep in mind that American Samoa has CBS and NBC programming on a 1-week tape delay from Honolulu. Any reference to something that happened "last night" on Jay Leno, would be premature here. There is no ABC, UPN or WB programming at all. We also get movies a month or so behind the mainland. (You can check the movie listings at the local theatre via the link on our website). HBO, ABC-Family and various other cable channels are also on a 1-week tape delay. We do get some live programming, like CNN/Asia, The BBC World News, and occasionally some Fox News Channel feeds. Below is a complete list of channels that we get here:

We do get FOX but they are a competitor, so let's not talk about them.

Things to do in American Samoa

Slow driving is an art here. Since there is just one road that goes from one end of the island to the other, you go as slow as the guy in front is going. There's no good place to pass becuse the roads are so winding. Speed limit is 20-25mph most places.

Go to the airport on Sunday and Thursday nights to watch the plane come in from Honolulu. Everybody here either knows somebody who is coming in on the plane or leaving, so the airport becomes a big social gathering.

Day trips to Aunu'u Island (Ow-NOO-oo... rhymes with cow-BLEW-you) are a lot of fun. All the folks living there are really friendly and hospitable. It's a beautiful place too. If you're tired of the everyday city hum-drum then catch the boat over to Aunu'u and spend the day hiking and checking out the quicksand lake and the coves. Make sure you bring plenty of water and don't forget your snorkel and mask!

You can buy lots of colorful fabrics here. Fabric IS Samoa. The people here wear lots of floral prints and Samoan designs. So, part of shopping is checking out the latest prints and patterns. Buy a few yards, take it over to the sewing shop, have an Aloha Shirt made with a matching dress for the lady. Or have some throw pillows made for the couch. This place is an interior decorator's exotic wet dream.
